Giorgio Armani's Partnership With Lady Gives Designer Creative Edge

The Italian fashion designer best known for the power suits that defined 1980s corporate America took an unusual turn of style this year when he dressed Lady Gaga in a crystal-encrusted silver hoop dress with orbiting rings for the Grammy Awards. The bondage-style black leather costumes in the American performer's racy 'Alejandro' video were also Mr. Armani's, as was a black rubberized dress with spikes sticking out from the breast the platinum-haired singer donned at the MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles. Mr. Armani will soon work on costumes for Lady Gaga's concert in Italy in December.

The 76-year-old designer's multimillion-dollar partnership with the 24-year-old pop idol has put Mr. Armani "in a new creative spotlight—individuality, edge, futuristic style," says retail-brand consultant Tom Julian. It is also an effort by one of fashion's oldest figures to rejuvenate his €1.5 billion business.

Since revolutionizing wardrobes 30 years ago by taking the lining out of blazers—to make them less stiff and more form-fitting—Mr. Armani has expanded his company into a sprawling empire with six separate adult clothing lines spanning from the exclusive haute couture Privé collection to mass-market A/X Armani Exchange fashion.

For years now, however, fashion critics haven't looked to Mr. Armani for new trends. The daughters of the women who climbed the corporate ladder a generation ago in Armani now gravitate toward younger designers such as Marc Jacobs and Alexander Wang. It remains to be seen whether his Emporio Armani women's fashion show, scheduled for Saturday, will be influenced by Lady Gaga, as his men's collection was in June.

 Lady Gaga took the role of a concerned citizen and insinuated herself into the debate of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell". According to the article below, she spoke at a Maine rally to propose a law called, 'If you don't like it, you can go home.' Apparently, it didn't work as Republicans on Tuesday blocked a move to repeal the ban on gays serving openly in the military.

You know things have gotten weird when recording artist Lady Gaga becomes the voice of reason. Gaga inserted herself into the debate over the military’s controversial “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy by speaking on Monday at a Maine rally to overturn the Clinton-era provision. 'I am here today because I want to propose a law called, 'If you don't like it, you can go home.' A law that sends home the homophobes, that sends home the prejudiced. If you are not committed to perform with excellence as a United States soldier because you don't believe in full equality, go home,' Gaga was reported to have told the 2,000 people at the rally.

Gaga’s words fell on deaf ears in the US Senate as Republicans on Tuesday blocked a move to repeal the ban on gays serving openly in the military. Republican Arizona Senator John McCain called the effort to repeal the ban 'a blatant political ploy in order to try to galvanize the political base of the other side, which is facing a losing election,' according to the Wall Street Journal.

Ending “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” isn’t about political calculus; it’s about right and wrong. What right does the government have to distinguish among us, to treat one group of citizens differently because of who they are?

There's one girl who really knows how to attract attention!  When Lady Gaga wore her raw meat creation to the MVA Awards, I expect that she already knew what a controversy she was igniting. She may not have cared too much about the animal rights people, but I'm quite sure that the plan was to get everyone in the world talking about her. Guess what? She succeeded in spades. Style Superstar Of The Week: Was Lady Gaga’s Meat Dress Grade A?

It was a big week for fashion—from fall shows, which just wrapped up, to the white carpet style at the 2010 Video Music Awards. Now, there were plenty of fab (and alternatively disastrous) looks over the past few days, but the ones that left the biggest impact came courtesy of scene stealers Lady Gaga and Kanye West.

Leave it to Lady Gaga to wear something straight off the butcher's block to the VMAs. Granted, her meat dress definitely got people talking, but not necessarily for the right reasons. We asked you whether Gaga's look deserved to be on the best- or worst-dressed list, and while it was a surprisingly close race, at press time 52 percent said the dress was a major fail—and we agree. Sorry Gaga, maybe try veggies next time?

That was Lady Gaga's unusual opening statement when she stepped onstage at MTV's Video Music Awards Sunday to receive her Video of the Year award from pop legend Cher.

After arriving at the ceremony in a dress from the late designer Alexander McQueen's final collection and then changing into a weighty, architectural gown and spiky crown by Giorgio Armani, Gaga turned heads (and we'd have to imagine noses) in her final outfit, a Franc Fernandez dress (plus boots, hat, and purse) cut together from what appeared to be slabs of raw meat. The outfit echoed the controversial meat bikini she recently wore for the cover

After the show, in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres, Gaga tried to explain that the dress was a political statement. Discussing how she'd been escorted to the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles by members of the U.S. military who had been discharged from the service due to the Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy, Lady Gaga said: "It is a devastation to me that I know my fans who are gay ... feel like they have governmental oppression on them. That's actually why I wore the meat tonight.

DeGeneres, a famous vegan who often speaks out on behalf of animal rights, pounced on the topic while keeping her distance from the dress. "It's certainly no disrespect to anyone that's vegan or vegetarian," Gaga responded. "As you know, I am the most judgment-free human being on the earth. It has many interpretations, but for me this evening, it's 'If we don't stand up for what we believe in, we don't fight for our rights, pretty soon we're gonna have as much rights as the meat on our bones.'"

Lady Gaga, producer withdraw dueling NY lawsuits

NEW YORK – They may have had a bad romance, but now there's a cordial professional split between Lady Gaga and a music producer who said she ditched him as both a collaborator and a boyfriend after he helped launch her career.

Court papers filed this week show the Grammy Award-winning 'Bad Romance' singer and songwriter-producer Rob Fusari agreed to dismiss the lawsuits each filed against the other in March in a Manhattan court.

He'd sought $30.5 million, but it's unclear whether they made any monetary deal.

"Lady Gaga and Rob Fusari have agreed to end their dispute amicably and wish each other well. There will be no further comment by either of them," the singer's camp said in a statement. A lawyer for Fusari didn't immediately respond to phone and e-mail messages Friday.

Fusari had said the pop-meets-performance-art sensation shoehorned him out of her lucrative career after he co-wrote such Gaga hits as "Paparazzi" and "Beautiful, Rich," came up with her stage name and helped get her record deal.
